Nepal is the only nation on earth that rises from near sea level to the 8,848-metre summit of Mount Everest within a span of just 150 kilometres. It contains eight of the world’s ten highest peaks and is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama (Lord Buddha). Nepal has a unique dual identity as the global capital of high-altitude mountaineering and a tropical biodiversity hotspot where one-horned rhinos inhabit the southern plains.
In Patan and Bhaktapur, Newar artisans utilise 12th-century lost-wax casting and intricate woodcarving seen in the iconic Peacock Window. The three UNESCO Durbar Squares serve as living museums, where 17th-century Malla palaces and tiered pagodas like Nyatapola—the valley’s tallest at 30 metres—have been meticulously restored. The squares remain central hubs for the Indra Jatra festival and daily communal markets.
The Khumbu and Annapurna regions feature a network of high-altitude teahouse trails reaching the 5,416-metre Thorong La Pass. These routes pass through Sherpa and Gurung settlements like Namche Bazaar, where yaks transport supplies across steel suspension bridges. The landscape is defined by the 6,812-metre Ama Dablam and the Annapurna Massif, with stone mani walls and chortens marking the entrance to every mountain village.
Lumbini is a sacred 4.8-kilometre zone centred on the Mayadevi Temple, marking the Buddha’s 623 BCE birthplace. To the west, Pokhara serves as a gateway to the mountains, where Phewa Lake reflects the fishtail peak of Machhapuchhre. In the southern Chitwan National Park, the landscape shifts to subtropical sal forests and elephant grass, sheltering over 600 greater one-horned rhinos and the rare gharial crocodile.
